Operations Update: This is the last Mountain Weather Forecast of the 2025-26 season. NWAC will continue to monitor snow and weather conditions. Large storms and/or widespread avalanche cycles may cause us to issue special avalanche bulletins, avalanche warnings, or other spring statements. Mountain Weather Forecasts typically begin in mid-November for the winter season. If you like sunshine and warm temperatures, you're in luck! We're wrapping up our weather forecasting season with a long stretch of warm and dry weather. A high pressure ridge has taken up residency over the Pacific Northwest and doesn't appear to be going away anytime soon. In general, each day should be fairly similar to the last, with only a few subtle changes. Mostly clear skies Sunday night should allow snow surfaces to freeze in open areas, even as temperatures stay well above freezing. On Monday, 5000 ft temperatures easily climb into the low to mid 60s. Passing bands of high thin clouds won't do much to provide relief from the strong May sun. While the chance of showers and thunderstorms is less on Monday, there's still a slight possibility for convective precipitation to develop mainly in the southern forecast zones and near Mt Hood. While most locations won't see precipitation, keep your eyes on the sky. If dark, ominous clouds start to form, a thunderstorm could be heading your way. Onshore flow Monday night may help draw slightly cooler air and a marine layer (clouds) into the lower elevations in the Olympics and west slopes of the Cascades. It's hard to say how far into the mountains any clouds will push. Higher in the terrain (5000 ft), diurnal temperature swings will once again allow nighttime lows to fall near 50 F. Temperatures quickly rebound on Tuesday, and any low clouds in the mountains retreat back to the coast. A passing disturbance to our east could spread a few more high and mid-level clouds over the area, primarily in the East North and East Central zones. But overall, it should be yet another warm, mostly sunny day in the mountains. Enjoy the spring and summer! Mountain Weather Forecasts typically begin in mid-November for the winter season. ~NWAC's Weather Forecasting Team
Extended Outlook
The high pressure ridge continues to control our weather through the remainder of the week. In general, each day will be very similar to the last. The biggest changes could be in the thickness and persistence of any overnight marine layer and ridgeline wind speeds. Overall expect mostly clear, mild nights followed by warm, sunny, dry days. The high pressure ridge flattens a bit on Wednesday, turning the upper air flow more westerly. This could be most noticeable with a change to more moderate ridgeline winds. However, our streak of dry, sunny weather doesn't seem to falter. When could we see a more substantial pattern shift? Good question. Most weather models don't hint at any meaningful change through at least next weekend.

Published: 2026-05-02 21:12:06Synopsis
It's a lovely spring day across the forecast region. Generally high thin clouds are keeping skies from turning full "blue bird" this afternoon, but there's still plenty of sunshine to go around. A few showers are starting to build along the Columbia River. As the afternoon progresses, we could see a few more convective showers pop up around the forecast region, but it's hard to say exactly where. Even as the upper air dynamics change slightly, these conditions will get stuck on repeat for the next several days. A cut-off low pressure system is slowly meandering its way down the Pacific coast Saturday afternoon. Eventually, it should stall off the coast of central California. As this happens, a high pressure ridge from the northern Pacific nudges into our region, setting up a generally stable weather pattern (Rex Block). This feature seems to stay with us through most of the week, bringing warm temperatures, generally light wind, and plenty of sunshine. For Sunday and Monday, we'll still have a slight (but not zero) chance of afternoon/evening showers or thunderstorms. Throughout this period, expect nighttime lows to remain well above freezing. High thin clouds will provide hazy skies with passing bands of filtered sunshine, but these wispy clouds won't do much to hinder the sun's power. Expect 5000ft temperatures to climb into the 60s across the region each day, with valley highs easily reaching into the 70s, and few sites nipping at the 80F mark. Low level flow shifts from E to W on Sunday, increasing RH values slightly. This, combined with a moderately unstable atmosphere, should help a few puffy cumulus clouds to build on Sunday and Monday afternoons. It also leaves the door open for a few showers or thunderstorms. While most locations won't see meaningful precipitation, nearly all mountain areas have a chance of showers/thunderstorms each day. Keep an eye on the sky. If the clouds start to build and darken, a thunderstorm could be heading your way.
Extended Outlook
Our stationary weather pattern makes each day feel exactly like the last through much of the week. With a high pressure ridge overhead and a cut-off low pressure near central California (Rex Block), we will stay warm and dry. There may be a few passing bands of high thin or small puffy cumulus clouds, but overall, skies remain mostly sunny. Light onshore flow could result in a marine layer pushing inland each night. It's hard to say how far it will creep up the westside mountain valley. However, this influx of moist cooler air will moderate temperatures slightly, especially in areas near and west of the Cascade Crest. Not surprisingly, large diurnal temperature swings ensue, with 5000ft lows dipping into the 40s or maybe high 30s, and afternoon highs rebounding to the low to mid 50/60s. Basically, we should see a parade of beautiful spring days. How long will this pattern last? You have to look pretty deep into the crystal ball to see any real change. Most weather models hint at a potential pattern shift next weekend.

Published: 2026-05-01 21:47:59Synopsis
Spring weather in the Pacific Northwest can be quite cool, wet, and active. That hasn't been the case recently, nor will it be over the next week, with mainly dry and mild-to-warm weather expected. A weak upper low off the coast will continue to spin a fair amount of mid and high clouds over the region tonight through Saturday. While dewpoints and low-level moisture are fairly dry, the air mass is marginally unstable. This means there's a low chance for pop-up showers or even a stray thunderstorm that could form over the mountains both Friday and Saturday afternoon and evening. You'll want to keep an eye on any clouds building in your area, and be prepared to shift plans if you're unlucky enough to encounter a storm. The upper low will also cause a period of light to locally moderate E-SE winds, blowing hardest near Mt Hood, the SW Cascades, and Cascade gaps through early Saturday afternoon. Saturday will be mild with 5000' high temperatures peaking in the upper 50s to mid 60s. Strong high pressure will nose eastward into the NE Pacific and over the aforementioned upper low, which is slinking further south along the West Coast on Sunday (Rex Block). This pattern will nudge temperatures and freezing levels even higher (11,000'+). With fewer mid/high clouds forecast on Sunday, this will really make it feel more like summer than spring with 5000' mountain temperatures well into the 60s and into the 80s in the valleys under mostly sunny skies.
Extended Outlook
The blocking pattern will slowly break down into next week as upper-level ridging and northerly flow aloft move over the region. Continued warm, dry and mostly clear weather will continue with the main change being a wind shift to onshore westerly flow. Ridgeline winds will become NW-erly starting Monday afternoon, with locally breezy winds in the afternoons and evenings. There's no obvious storm on the horizon looking into the crystal ball for at least the next week and potentially longer.

Published: 2026-04-30 21:44:43Synopsis
Quiet and increasingly warm weather is on tap for the next week across the Pacific Northwest. A weak front positoned well offshore will spin a few mid and high clouds into the region tonight and Friday. The approaching front will also continue a period of SE ridgeline winds across the area through at least Saturday, if not Sunday. Influence from modest onshore westerly flow in the afternoons and early evenings may turn the winds more S-SW. The lower air mass is rather dry, so even with daytime heating, a trough offshore and marginal instability indices, the best we can squeeze out is a slight chance of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm over the Cascades. A fair amount of afternoon cloud cover also makes it difficult to get excited about our chances for convective precipitation Friday/Friday night. Any showers that do spark up will continue Friday evening would be located near the Cascade Crest and likely drift from the S-SE to N-NW. Freezing levels will be between 9000'-10,000' and 5000' temperatures will peak in the upper 50s to low 60s on Friday. Saturday looks similar and we'll see a fair bit of cloud cover along with a slight chance of mountain showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. Periods of light to moderate S-SE winds will continue as well.
Extended Outlook
By Sunday, the upper level pattern will feature a rex block as high pressure offshore builds over an upper low off the California coast. This should lead to milder weather as the ridge noses over the PNW through Monday and increasingly warm weather, including mild overnight low temperatures. The dry and mild weather will persist well into the first week of May.

Published: 2026-04-29 21:29:21Synopsis
The Pacific Northwest is transitioning toward an extended period of summer-like weather. Although daytime temperatures will be unseasonably mild for this stage of spring, light winds and minimal cloud cover will help 5000 ft temperatures cool into the upper 30s to mid-40s each night. The region sits under weak northerly flow aloft on Wednesday afternoon, with fair-weather cumulus clouds popping up over the terrain and clear skies elsewhere. 5000 ft temperatures are generally in the low 50s, with the Puget Sound lowlands rising into the 60s and isolated 70 degree readings east of the mountains. Light N and E ridgeline winds are evident from the direction of cloud motion. The offshore ridge gradually gains increasing influence as it noses onshore by Thursday. As it does, expect ridgeline winds to continue to have an easterly component while freezing levels climb from 8500 toward 9500 ft or so. Ridgeline winds are likely to shift back toward more westerly late in the day. The ridge shifts SE slightly but remains the dominant influence Thursday night. A weak trough moves into our nearshore waters on Friday, but is more likely to slow than to halt the warming trend. Expect some increased high clouds Thursday night into Friday, but low clouds are likely confined closer to the coast.
Extended Outlook
The offshore trough gradually forms a cutoff low on Friday night. Some models indicate a slight chance of very light showers or drizzle for portions of the southern Cascades Friday night, but minimal accumulation is expected. As the cutoff low drifts south, it cuts off the available moisture supply and opens the door to yet warmer conditions, with enhanced high pressure essentially surrounding the cutoff low off the California Coast. With this pattern, expect mountain temperatures to be 20-30F above seasonal norms on Saturday through Sunday, with sunny skies and light winds.

The weather pattern seems more reminiscent of June than the variable weather we typically expect in the springtime. Weather systems impacting our region continue to be weak and mostly dry. A disturbance passing over the area on NNW flow aloft on Tuesday maintains enough moisture and low-level onshore flow for a 3,000-5,000 ft cloud deck over most areas west of the Cascade Crest with a few mid-level clouds as well. This disturbance continues to bring areas of patchy, very light drizzle or snow flurries. Accumulations may approach a hundredth of an inch of water equivalent for some west-side locations on Tuesday afternoon, but it is even less likely to produce this amount during the evening hours as the shortwave disturbance shifts to our southeast. In its wake, mostly cloudy skies linger west of the Cascade Crest with clearing to the east. Expect some of these clouds to linger along the west slopes into the morning hours on Wednesday. Increasing influence from the offshore high should break up these clouds, but do expect some fair-weather cumulus across the region in the afternoon as the freezing level rises to around 8000 ft as ridgeline winds generally become light and variable. The offshore ridge noses into the region Wednesday night into Thursday, resulting in continued warming as freezing levels push into the 8,500-9,500 ft. Expect mostly clear/sunny skies with thin, high clouds at times.
Extended Outlook
It's going to be very warm Friday into the weekend. The ridge likely shifts slightly east as a closed low develops off the California coast. Most likely, this leaves our region in a split-flow pattern, dominated by high pressure and generally light onshore flow. Expect mostly sunny skies with occasional high clouds on Friday and Saturday. Mountain temperatures could be 15-25F above average for early May. However, there is a chance that a dry front will bring another period of onshore flow and cloud cover into our region, which could limit the anomalous temperatures.

The Pacific Northwest sits under NNW flow aloft with very weak disturbances moving over the region. Low-level onshore flow keeps a 3,000-5,000 ft cloud deck pinned against the west slopes of the Cascades. On Monday afternoon, this cloud deck generally didn't have enough lift to make it into the heart of the Cascades. Meanwhile, afternoon cumulus clouds have formed near the Cascade Crest with light to occasionally moderate W or WNW ridgeline winds pushing this weak convection onto the east slopes of the Cascades. Although the convection dies down overnight, the onshore flow and low clouds remained pinned against the west slopes of the Cascades with little to no expected precipitation. Temperatures will drop into the 30s at most 5,000-ft locales, but are likely to drop below freezing around Washington Pass and in the typically colder valleys of the northern interior Cascades. Breezy conditions on the east slopes of the Cascades will reduce the potential for cooling under the clear skies. A slightly more organized disturbance is likely to move into the region with some mid-level clouds on Tuesday morning. This should create some filtered sunshine across the region at times, while the same low clouds remain against the W slopes of the Cascades. There's likely just enough lift with this system to produce a few hundredths of an inch of precipitation from Mt Rainier northward to Mt Baker, mainly in the mid-day and afternoon hours as snow levels hover around 5000 ft. Clouds gradually decrease, and the very light precipitation shuts off Tuesday night as an offshore ridge expands into the region. Expect more sunshine than clouds on Wednesday, but with weak onshore flow, some low cloud is likely in the morning hours for the Puget Sound lowland. Freezing levels rise from Tuesday night onwards, reaching around 8000 ft on Wednesday afternoon.
Extended Outlook
The offshore high moves onshore Wednesday night into Thursday morning, bringing 8500-9500 ft freezing levels. A disturbance passes to the north of the region Thursday night into Friday morning and could bring some clouds to areas near the Canadian border. The ridge expands once again by Friday afternoon. Temperatures should be above seasonal norms throughout the extended forecast period.

It’s another beautiful, sunny day across the Pacific Northwest, with the region still in an extended stretch of dry weather. Temperatures are generally in the mid-40s °F at 5,000 feet, with light winds and scattered clouds building over the Cascade Crest. Wind directions are quite variable, with mountain passes shifting east–west and ridgelines mostly trending N or NE. Skies will stay mostly clear overnight, while low-level clouds develop along the coast and push into Puget Sound. A weak disturbance approaching the region will start to bring some changes on Monday, beginning with increasing cloud cover through the day. Areas near the Crest should turn partly to mostly cloudy by Monday evening. Ridgeline winds will trend toward moderate speeds in the afternoon as upper-level flow turns westerly. As clouds increase, there’s a chance of isolated rain and high-elevation snow along the western slopes and around Mt. Hood, but any precipitation will be brief and spotty. Cloud cover will continue Monday night into Tuesday, with an increasing chance of rain and snow. Snow levels should remain relatively steady near 5,000 feet. Recent guidance has reduced the total precipitation for this system, with the bulk of the moisture focused near Mt. Baker and the West Central zone. At best, these areas could see up to about 0.1 inches of water by Tuesday evening. Southern zones will see significantly less, likely just some light rain or snow, Monday night into Tuesday.
Extended Outlook
Dry weather continues through the extended forecast. Cloud cover will begin to break on Tuesday night, and any lingering precipitation will taper off. An upper-level ridge will build over the western Cascades from Wednesday through Thursday, bringing sunny skies and a steady rise in daytime high temperatures.

Dry and relatively calm weather continues across the Pacific Northwest. This afternoon, scattered convective clouds are building along the Cascade Crest, primarily in the southern zones and around the volcanoes, but no precipitation is expected. Winds aloft are generally light and northerly, while the mountain passes have flipped-flopped between east and west. This pattern holds into Sunday, with the region positioned between a large low-pressure system over inland Canada and upper-level ridging over the northern Pacific. Expect similar conditions, with overnight valley inversions and cool northerly flow limiting warming on both sides of the Crest. Skies will clear tonight into Sunday morning, followed by another round of afternoon convective cloud buildup. Ridgeline winds will gradually shift NW throughout the day, with periods of E wind through the mountain passes. Flow aloft shifts from northerly to northwesterly Sunday night into Monday as the low over Canada moves east, and the Pacific ridging backs away from Washington. A weak disturbance will move closer overnight into Monday, bringing a slight chance of showers to most west-side zones. Precipitation looks minimal to start the day on Monday, increasing in the afternoon. Showers will be focused on the West North and Mt Baker areas, with notably less to the southern zones.
Extended Outlook
Light precipitation will continue Monday night into Tuesday as a weak system moves over Washington. Showers look to stay along the west side of the Crest, with higher amounts for Mt Baker and Paradise. Clouds and precipitation will linger through Tuesday morning before gradually breaking up in the afternoon. High pressure rebuilds over the region on Wednesday, bringing a return to sunny skies and warming temperatures. Expect more seasonable diurnal swings, with stronger daytime warming along the east slopes and south toward Mount Hood.

Published: 2026-04-24 21:30:15Synopsis
The Pacific Northwest has locked into a fair weather pattern through the weekend. The reason for this static weather pattern is our position between a deep low-pressure system east of the Rockies and high pressure offshore. This setup will maintain dry northerly flow aloft, with temperatures near seasonal norms. Cooler air moving in from the north over interior Washington will limit the typically warmer springtime temperatures that often develop along the east slopes of the Cascades as we head deeper into the spring. It will be challenging to forecast the ridgeline winds for any specific location, but expect the highest elevations, such as the volcanoes, to be more influenced by the northerly flow, while areas near the Cascade Crest and mountain gaps will be more influenced by a weak diurnal signal of onshore flow during the mid-day through evening hours, with offshore flow developing each night. Throughout the weekend, anticipate mountain temperatures dropping close to the freezing mark overnight under mostly clear skies. Temperatures rebound quickly with morning sunshine. There’s just enough cool air aloft to trigger some scattered cumulus clouds and perhaps a stray shower each afternoon, with shower chances increasing to 20-40% over the southern Cascades late Sunday as a subtle shift toward more W winds adds moisture to daytime heating and weak convective buildup. Although freezing levels to vary from 4500-6500 ft following a diurnal trend through the weekend, snow levels would drop to 4000 ft or so during shower activity.
Extended Outlook
Winds switch westerly late Sunday as a weak disturbance approaches, increasing low cloud cover overnight. Expect scattered light rain or snow showers to develop over the west slopes of the Cascades during the day on Monday, mostly during the afternoon hours. Shower activity continues Monday night and gradually winds down on Tuesday. Models indicate enhanced convergence over the mountain loop area, with up to 0.25" of water equivalent, while other parts of the West Slopes receive less than 0.10". Snow levels hover between 4000-5000 ft with this disturbance. Expect partly to mostly sunny skies and milder temperatures east of the Cascade Crest with some breezy conditions thanks to downslope W winds.

No mountain weather product will be issued on Thursday, April 23 due to our end-of-season team meeting. Forecasts will resume Friday, April 24. A closed low over western Montana that brought significant moisture to southern and central portions of the Cascades on Wednesday gradually exits to the east. Light rain and higher elevation snow shower activity linger, but gradually decrease, along the west slopes of the Cascades through the night as NW flow aloft traps some low-level moisture thanks to moderate to strong onshore low-level flow. The shower and very weak convergence activity will just be enough to keep it cloudy and damp along the west slopes of the Cascades while warmer, drier, windier conditions will exist east of the Cascade Crest. Southern portions of the forecast region will be slightly cooler, which combined with a bit more sustained shower activity through the evening could bring an additional inch or so of snow to Mt Hood. The NNW flow pattern continues Thursday through Friday as an offshore gains influence over the departed low. Lingering low cloud west of the Cascade Crest could touch off an isolated shower or flurry in the northern Cascades early Thursday, but clouds will gradually break up as the day, leading to partly to mostly sunny skies in the afternoon. Freezing levels rise to around 6000-8000 ft in the afternoons both days.
Extended Outlook
There's not much in the way of pattern change in the long-range. Freezing levels hover near seasonal norms 6000-6500 ft. We are watching the potential for a chunk of the stationary low over south-central Canada to split off and retrograde westward toward our area. This could bring in some slightly cooler air aloft and a slight chance of an isolated shower or thunderstorm on Sunday.
